NJ cop fatally shoots man while responding to call about altercation

ORANGE, N.J. — Authorities say a police officer shot and killed a suspect while responding to a call about an armed man in New Jersey.

The New Jersey attorney general’s office said officers in Orange were sent to Oakwood Towers shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday on a report of an altercation and a man with a knife.

Officers encountered the suspect, and during the encounter one of the officers fired. The man was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.

The attorney general’s office identified the man as 46-year-old Jamahl Smith. No further information was immediately released about the earlier altercation or the confrontation with officers.

Under a law enacted in January, the attorney general’s office is required to investigate deaths during encounters with law enforcement officers.
