SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — Police on Long Island issued a warning Friday about creepy clowns acting menacing.

Officers have received reports of clowns, but have not been able to confirm any of the reports, police said. No officers have personally witnessed anyone in a clown costume.

Clown sightings have prompted heightened security at local schools. Elementary school students in Lindenhurst were kept inside during recess Friday after district officials discovered a tweet indicating that clowns were coming to the area.

Police in the area have received two reports of clowns. A person wearing a clown costume was reported in North Babylon. Police also received reports of a group of people dressed as clowns in Brentwood Wednesday night. The clowns were allegedly seen jumping in front of cars.

One woman tweeted about the clowns and cautioned drivers to be careful on the roads.

"Everyone please be careful driving tonight in Brentwood," she wrote. "I just witnessed 3 men dressed in clown suits on Commack Rd. Coming towards my car."

Suffolk County police said they are taking the reports seriously.

A Twitter account with the handle @LIClowns (Suffolk Clowns) appeared on Friday. The account claims to be the ones behind the creepy clown attacks. The individual(s) tweeted threats to two high schools — Sachem North and Deer Park. However, the legitimacy of the account has not been verified.

Creepy clown sightings have been reported across the country. New Jersey police received four reports of clowns earlier this week. Three clowns allegedly chased a boy in Walter Park on Sunday. There were also clown sightings Monday; in the first instance, a person dressed as a clown was seen walking down the street in Hudson County and in the second instance, a person in a jester outfit was seen chasing a boy.

A truck with clowns hanging out the window was also spotted driving down a New Jersey street. People have reported creepy clowns in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Some school districts have temporarily shut down following clown sightings.
