RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It’s just another afternoon inside the 55 Kip Center in Rutherford, N.J. where needles and yarn are hard at work and a group of patriots knit for a noble cause.

Over the course of a year, their inventory has ballooned to well over 100 knitted creations that include blankets, hats and scarves.

All of the items are headed to numerous military hospitals in Washington, D.C. and North Carolina this month as part of the Nassau County Firefighters’ Operation Wounded Warrior organization.

The non-profit organization provides much-needed items and gifts of appreciation to wounded members of the armed services.

“It makes us feel like we’re doing something important,” 55 Kip Center member Margaret Mensah, of Rutherford, told PIX11 News.

“They took the time to do something for us and they lost their limbs and we just do our little bit [in order] to give them something to say thank you.”

An emotional Carol VanSavage, of Clifton, shared the same sentiment.

“They’ve given so much that we can never repay them so it’s a little something we can do for them,” VanSavage said.

From colorful blankets, to intricately designed hats and scarves, just give these ladies some knitting needles and yarn and the possibilities are endless.

According to Doris Artale, of Rutherford, the reward for the group is knowing that their knitted works have a final destination.

“It’s like a purpose,” Artale said. “We have a purpose in life. It’s not like our life is over because we are retired and it gives you hope.”

If you’d like to donate to their cause by contributing knitting or crocheting materials, please visit the 55 Kip Center Facebook page or email Cathy Baviello:
