BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- An elementary school teacher has been arrested for alleged sex crimes involving a 16-year-old boy, officials said.
Waris Grant was arrested Thursday on suspicion of criminal sex act, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Kings County District Attorney's Office. An NYPD spokesperson said Grant also faces charges of promoting prostitution.
Grant has worked for the Department of Education since 2001. He's been a teacher at P.S. 256 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which caters to grades pre-Kindergarten to fifth, since 2003, officials said.
The 37-year-old is accused of performing oral sex on a 16-year-old boy on at least two occasions, according to a complaint filed with the Kings County District Attorney.
The alleged sex acts happened at a home between Nov. 20, 2014, and Dec. 23, 2014, according to the complaint. It was not immediately clear at whose home the alleged crimes occurred.
In the wake of his arrest, Grant was reassigned by the school to a role that does not involve direct contact with students, pending the investigation.
"While the allegations against Mr. Grant are not school-related, they are deeply disturbing. DOE took swift action to immediately remove him from the classroom, and he will remain away from students," DOE spokesperson Devora Kaye said in a statement to PIX11 News.
Grant’s bond has been set at $7,500, according to the New York City Corrections online information center.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 28.AlertMe
