There are new and puzzling developments in the story of the local police chief accused of beating up a helpless prisoner. That prisoner no longer has a lawyer.

Suffolk County Police Chief James went to the home of 26-year-old Chris Loeb last December after Loeb was arrested for stealing the Chief’s duffel bag from his unmarked police vehicle.

Loeb has said that the Chief beat him up twice after his arrest.  There’s now an FBI probe into those allegations.

But yesterday, Loeb’s lawyer removed herself from the case, citing a conflict of interest.

Another attorney took the case, but — get this — he dropped it in less than an hour.
