Bedford–Stuyvesant, BROOKLYN (PIX11) — The family of 11-year-old Tayloni Mazyck worries she will be paralyzed for life, after a stray bullet struck her in the neck.

The girl was standing outside her home at 600 Gates Avenue with her mother and 7-month-old niece, when gunfire erupted nearby around 8:30 Friday night.

Police say Kane Cooper, 17, took aim at two men in front of 590 Gates Avenue, but one of the bullets hit the fifth grader as she tried to get back into her building.

“She’s paralyzed from the neck down,” said Robert Mazyck, after visiting his daughter at Columbia University Hospital.  “But she’s in good spirits, she’s awake, she’s alive.”

Her family had been looking forward to her graduation from P.S. 44 later this month.

“She’s never going to be the same, and I don’t understand why people don’t get together and push the garbage out of the neighborhood,” said the girl’s aunt, Michelle Fitzpatrick.

“All you gangbangers, thugs, you are hurting the children.  You are killing us.”

The suspect, who is known to the 79th precinct’s anti-crime unit, was caught on surveillance video and taken into custody.  He’s facing several charges, including attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
