CNN– A referee from a recreational soccer league in Utah has died from injuries he received in an assault during a recent game

Salt Lake City police say 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo was punched in the face by a 17-year-old player after a penalty call.

It happened on a field in Taylorsville last weekend.

At first it seemed Portillo only suffered minor injuries in the assault.

But later at a hospital doctors discovered he had serious internal head injuries.

He remained in critical condition for a week, before passing away Saturday night.

The teen is currently in a juvenile detention facility and could now face additional charges.
