NEW YORK (PIX11)- New polls show national support for sweeping federal gun legislation is falling as time separates Americans from the shock of the Newtown school massacre.

Support is also waning in Congress, and some are asking if mayor Bloomberg’s multi-billion dollar ad blitz is backfiring on his cause.

The ads target specific democratic senators in their home states.

On NBC’s meet the press, Senator Chuck Schumer was asked if Bloomberg is doing more harm than good.

Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Guns group is running twelve million dollars’ worth of television ads to counter lobbying by the National Rifle Association.
