NEWARK (PIX11) – A carjacker forced a woman out of her car in Newark, NJ, Thursday evening, and took off with the vehicle with the woman’s young children, police said.

Around 7:48 p.m. Newark police were called to the scene on the 700 block of South 17th St. where the woman had been sitting with her two children in her parked Nissan Pathfinder.

The suspect forced her out of the vehicle and sped off with the 3-year-old and 11-month-old in the back seat.

An Essex County Sheriff officer patrolling the area found the car abandoned in front of South 19th St., with the children inside, unharmed.

The children have since been returned to their mother.  Police are still searching for the suspect.
