TRENTON (PIX11) – It’s pretty much official: Newark Mayor Cory Booker moved ahead in his plans to run for U.S. Senate, filing the required paperwork for the coveted seat.

Booker filed the papers on January 8 ahead of the expected run for the seat in 2014.

The beloved mayor of Newark has gained popularity over the years and at one point, generated speculation of a possible run for governor of New Jersey which would have had him challenging Gov. Chris Christie.

Booker made headlines last month after posting a video on YouTube where he announced his plans to run for Senate.

It’s still unclear if Booker will be challenging 5-term Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who has yet to clarify whether he will run for another term.
