Emergency crews were tending to a whale that was beached Wednesday on the shore of Breezy Point, Queens.
The 30-foot-long whale was still alive, and firefighters were hosing it with a generator pumping salt water.
The animal is believed to be a female sperm whale who is sick and far away from her normal turf out in the Atlantic Ocean. She is also injured, and an expert on the scene told PIX11 the outlook is grim. “We try to save them but a lot of the time they end up dying.”.
The whale was beached near Beach 216th Street and Palmer Drive in the Queens neighborhood, recently in the news because of a devastating fire that broke out the night Hurricane Sandy hit.
In addition to FDNY, the NYPD had two boats on the scene. Experts on stranded mammals from the Riverhead Foundation on Long Island were en route to assist the animal.
