BREEZY POINT — It’s a shocking and sad sight to stumble upon – a 60- foot whale stuck in the sand.
Nearby resident Louis Bassolino was walking along the shoreline around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday near Beach 216th Street when he found the mammal.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. At first I thought it was an overturned boat but when I got closer I realized what I what it was. ”
Bassolino called his family and told them to bring buckets. He took a video with his cellphone of his wife and daughter dousing the whale after he called the police for help.
“At first they didn’t believe me!” he said. Then the police called the point breeze fire department to check it out.
Volunteers spent hours using hoses and a portable pump to keep the whale hydrated.
Wildlife experts say the whale is a fin whale – the largest species of whale. Normally a whale of that size would weigh 60 tons but experts say this one is so emaciated from being sick that it only weighs 20 to 30 tons.
By the end of the day rescue crews told Pix111 they were not confident the whale would live even though high tide came in and submerged the whale.
“Its not looking good. The animal is really sick. At this point we are keeping our distance and letting nature take its course. “AlertMe
